Despite Kuala Kubu Baharu ‘wipeout’, PRM to contest Sungai Bakap by-election

PETALING JAYA: Despite its candidate losing her deposit in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election last month, Parti Rakyat Malaysia will be throwing its hat into the ring for the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election.

Its president, Ahmad Jufliz Faiza, said the party’s political bureau is finalising the candidate after deciding that it would contest the seat last week.

“We are in the midst of choosing the best candidate for the seat,” Jufliz told FMT.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election was won by Pakatan Harapan’s Pang Sock Tao, of DAP. She defeated her closest rival, Perikatan Nasional’s Khairul Azhari Saut, with a 3,869-vote majority.

Independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin and PRM’s Hafizah Zainuddin only managed to win 188 and 152 ballots, respectively.

Jufliz, formerly of PKR, had said PRM’s defeat in Kuala Kubu Baharu was not the end for the party as it could still contribute to the nation.

He said PRM often contested in elections in Penang and had also vied for the Sungai Bakap seat in 2018, where it fielded Tan Joon Long. Tan had only managed to garner 55 votes then.

The Sungai Bakap by-election will be held on July 6 with nominations taking place on Saturday.

PH has named PKR’s Joohari Ariffin as its candidate while Abidin Ismail of PAS will be contesting for PN.

Abidin is a former aide to the Sungai Bakap assemblyman, Nor Zamri Latiff, whose death on May 24 caused the state seat to fall vacant.
