KUALA LUMPUR: A businessman who is accused of soliciting and accepting bribes amounting to RM15mil to secure government projects in 2021 claims to have sent a letter to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to clarify details of the charges against him.

Senior lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, who will lead Datuk Seri Sim Choo Thiam’s defence team, told Sessions Court judge Rozina Ayob that the defence had sent the letter, dated June 6, requesting the particulars of the charges to the MACC.

“We had sent the letter as the charges were vague.

“However, we have yet to receive a response regarding the letter,” he told reporters after the proceedings on Wednesday (June 14).

Deputy Public Prosecutor Abd Muntaqim Abdul Aziz said that neither the MACC nor the prosecution had yet to receive the letter or any notice of the letter.

The court then asked the prosecution to do a follow-up check on the status of the letter sent to MACC, according to Abd Muntaqim.

The court then set June 28 for further case management of Sim’s case before ending the brief proceeding.

In May this year, Sim, who is a 53-year-old company director, was charged with four counts of soliciting and accepting bribes amounting to RM15mil to secure projects from the Home Ministry in 2021.

The charges included one count of soliciting a bribe amounting to RM15mil from Asia Coding Centre Sdn Bhd managing director Hep Kim Hong through Syed Abu Zafran Syed Ahmad along with another three counts of accepting RM15mil in bribes from the same individual, sometime in June and on July 30, 2021.

The charges were framed under Section 16 (a)(B) of the MACC Act, punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act, which carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe or RM10,000 whichever is higher, if convicted.

Sim is currently out on an RM1mil bail.
