Understand objectives of Rukun Negara – Lecturer

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — Emphasis should be placed to the five objectives of Rukun Negara and as they should be imbued and ingrained to give a deeper sense of appreciation and to give the community in this country its identity.

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) International Studies Centre lecturer, Prof Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani said the objectives of Rukun Negara are an important aspect which expound the meaning relating to the formation of the nation.

“We may only remember the five principles as a pledge of loyalty to the country which is part two of Rukun Negara.

“The first part which is the objective or introduction for Rukun Negara is the actual ideology for the formation of Malaysia which should be introduced to every citizen from young,” he said.

He was commenting on the matter as a guest in the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Rukun Negara Grand Stand programme which was aired live via Bernama TV Facebook here today.

Mohd Azizuddin said if the objectives on the formation of the country were not given due attention, disputes on the Federal Constitution, Constitutional Monarch and issues relating to religion would arise.

“To understand the pledge, the basic objectives should be explained. The first objective is to achieve stronger unity among the people.

“The second is to preserve the democratic way of live while the third is to create a fair and just society where the wealth of the country is enjoyed fairly and equitably.

“The fourth is the formation of a liberal attitude on the rich cultural traditions which shaped the multiracial, multi-religious community as well as the fifth to build to a progressive society using modern science and technology,” he said.

“We have not really appreciated Rukun Negara which resulted in Malaysians forgetting the foundation built in this country especially among the generations after independence and after the declaration of Rukun Negara. Therefore, after 50 years, there is a need to revive understanding the Rukun Negara

“It is not easy but I think there should be continuous efforts from the lowest education level such as pre-school as an introduction and later refreshed in adulthood,” he said.

In this regard, Mohd Azizuddin said the government today is seen as giving serious commitment to revive the foundation of unity among the multiracial people in the country.

“It is significant when the prime minister himself headed the reading of Rukun Negara at the launch of Rukun Negara anniversary celebration today as fostering the unity agenda of the country should be led by its top leadership,” he added.

The Rukun Negara golden jubilee celebration at Bangunan Perdana Putra, Putrajaya today which was launched by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, was organised jointly by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry and the National Unity Ministry.

It was carried live by Bernama TV (Astro 502, myFreview 121 and unifi TV 631), RTM, Astro Awani as well as social media.

Rukun Negara was declared on August 31 1970 by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Almarhum Tuanku Ismail Nasirudin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Zainal Abidin to achieve stronger unity among the people after the 1969 May 13 incident.

Rukun Negara which is the philosophy of Malaysia, has five principles namely Belief in God, Loyalty to King and Country, Supremacy of the Constitution, Rule of Law and Good behaviour and morality.
