PETALING JAYA: Desperate for answers but left without a platform to ask them, Klang MP Charles Santiago has written to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun in hopes his questions will be forwarded to the ministers in charge.

With Parliament suspended because of the emergency, Santiago said MPs like himself have faced obstructions in raising issues that require quick answers from Putrajaya.

“As an MP, I carry the mandate of the people and the responsibility to execute my duties, especially in this Covid-19 crisis. Hence, I’m asking for your cooperation to allow me to raise several written questions.

“These issues are based on proposals to control the Covid-19 virus and touch on the people’s survival in facing the economic effects of the pandemic. These are also the questions Klang voters are asking.

“I ask that you would allow this proposal and to request written answers for these questions I am attaching with this letter,” he said in the letter to Azhar.

Santiago’s written questions include asking the human resources minister if there were plans to screen all Malaysians working in the informal sector and how many employers have failed to provide suitable housing for workers.

He also asked the home minister if Putrajaya was willing to offer a six-month amnesty to undocumented migrants to encourage them to be screened for Covid-19 and to be vaccinated.

He also wanted the housing and local government minister to state if the government was willing to build houses for migrant workers and rent them out to small- and medium-sized enterprises that cannot afford to set up new lodgings for their foreign employees.
