Fahmi Redza charged with posting offensive material

Popular local social activist and graphic designer Mohd Fahmi Redza Mohd Zarin, who is infamous for his political satires, was charged at the Sessions Court here today with uploading an offensive posting.

Fahmi, who was clad in his trademark black jacket and trousers, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before Judge Datin Sabariah Othman.

The 44-year-old was accused of uploading a picture with words relating to the Covid-19 quarantine period via his Twitter account ‘Fahmi Reza’ at 3.02am on Feb 10 last year.

Fahmi was alleged to have initiated false communication via the picture with intention to annoy the feelings of others.

He faces a maximum one year jail, RM50,000 fine or both if convicted under Section 233(1) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Deputy public Prosecutor Najihah Farhana Che Awang asked the court to impose RM10,000 bail against the accused.

However, counsel Rajsurian Pillai who represented Fahmi requested a lower bail, stating that it was only meant to guarantee his client’s attendance in court.

He also pleaded that his client only earned about RM3,000 monthly and needed to support his parents.

The court later set RM5,000 bail with one surety and fixed March 4 for mention.
