MPs to be imposed RM10,000 fine for violating rules in Parliament sessions
SHAH ALAM – Any MPs who violate the rules especially by uttering inappropriate remarks during a Parliament session will be fined a maximum of RM10,000.
According to local media reports, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said it was part of the move to amend the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952.
“The Act will be amended including increasing the maximum fine from RM1,000 to 10,000 for parliamentarians who break the rules in an effort to achieve a first class Parliament.
“The fine would be imposed on MPs who make unparliamentary remarks and they can also be suspended from Parliament,” he said.
Johari said he hoped that the amendment of the Act could form a more professional parliamentary debate.
“This act will be enacted to ensure that MPs contribute to the progress of the country by stopping all unparliamentary actions and remarks.
“I hope that in the upcoming sessions, we will be able to have a better discussion or MPs will be impose with a RM10,000 fine or leave the Dewan,” he said.
