KUALA LUMPUR – The marriage of former Batu candidate Nur Fathiah Syazwana Shaharuddin or popularly known as Cleopatra and former deputy inspector-general of police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Mohd Zinin has never took place.

Syarie lawyer Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader who represented Cleopatra said his client never went to Thailand to get married.

Akberdin said the controversial marriage certificate said to be issued in Thailand which was sent by an anonymous person to his client amid rumours of her marriage with Bakri, was fake.

He highlighted that through investigations carried out by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi), last year, the marriage certificate was found to be fake.

In an immediate reaction to the findings, Akberdin said his client filed a legal action at the syariah lower court, here, seeking for the court to nullify the certificate.

The application, he said was made to debunk rumours and to clarify her marital status amidst the speculation.

“Usually, applications like this are made to confirm marriages that occurred outside the country, but my client’s case is somewhat unique; we file it here for the court to decide that the marriage did not take place,” he said when met after the proceedings, today.

He said the legal action aimed at restoring his client’s reputation and to seek justice.

“She (Cleopatra) sincerely wants this matter to be investigated and she wants truth and justice,” Akberdin added.

Meanwhile, Cleopatra said she had not filed any police reports regarding the matter.

“We are trying to avoid that path. There is no attempt to damage anyone’s reputation.

“But if that has to be done, we cannot do anything. Everyone needs to follow the procedure. I hope this matter can be resolved smoothly and as soon as possible,” she said.

The court today set April 22 for decision on the application.
