KUALA LUMPUR: A former assistant secretary of the transport ministry pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to three charges of accepting bribes totalling RM2,300 more than three years ago.

The first offence was said to have taken place at 3pm on Feb 20, 2020, at Malayan Banking Bhd, Rivercity Jalan Ipoh branch in Kuala Lumpur.

The second offence allegedly occurred on April 15, at 4.32pm at the same location, while the third offence was said to have taken place on May 21, at 6.24pm at the same location.

Hafiz was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code with accepting the bribes as a government servant, which, upon conviction, is punishable with imprisonment of up to two years.

Sessions court judge Azura Alwi granted bail at RM7,000 with one surety, which the accused posted.

She also ordered that Hafiz’s passport be impounded.

Earlier, prosecuting officer Zahariman Keman asked for bail to be set at RM10,000 given the severity of the charges.

However, lawyer Hazman Ahmad, appearing for the accused, requested a lower bail sum, saying the accused had to care for his sickly wife and his four children.

The case was set for mention on March 6.
