ALOR STAR: Kedah Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) today lodged a report with the Kedah Islamic Religious Department (Jaik) against a khatib for allegedly delivering a politically-charged sermon at Masjid Sungai Limau, Padang Serai, last Friday.

Its vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar urged Jaik to investigate the khatib for allegedly trying to incite divisive politics among Muslims in the state.

“This particular incident occurred on March 17, during which the khatib raised two issues and turned the mosque into a political arena.

“Firstly, he called for support for Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor’s leadership, which was explicitly mentioned in the sermon.

“Secondly, he made allegations that the federal government is oppressive, citing the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawal snubs and the Kulim International Airport issues as examples.

“We urge the religious department to take action, so that these incidents will not divide the Muslims and lead to any social division among Muslims,” said Mahfuz, after handing over a memorandum protesting political sermons to Jaik director Datuk Abd Ghani @ Zulkifli Zainuddin.

Also present was Kedah Amanah chairman Datuk Dr Ismail Salleh.

Mahfuz also called on Jaik to ensure that all mosques and Friday prayer congregations in the state not be utilised as a political platform.

The Kedah Pakatan Harapan chairman also urged Jaik to investigate two members of the State Fatwa Council who declared it obligatory for Muslims to vote for PN during the 15th General Election.

Commenting further, he said Kedah Amanah would be having a meeting with the Raja Muda of Kedah Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Sultan Sallehuddin, who is also Jaik chairman, at a later date.

Meanwhile, Mahfuz called for all political parties and leaders to refrain from raising aggressive and divisive political statements during the month of Ramadan.

“Regarding politics during Ramadan, it is not wrong to be politically active during this time, but it should not bring divisive elements to the society.

“The focus should be on the struggle for people’s welfare and the country’s development,” he added.
