Alumni Masscom UiTM disagrees with merger

KUALA LUMPUR: The UiTM Masscom Alumni has disagreed with Universiti Teknologi Mara’s move to merge the faculties of communication and media studies; and the computer and mathematical sciences.

The restructuring, part of an austerity measure, was announced by UiTM’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Roziah Mohd Janor in her speech at the communication and media studies faculty’s 50th anniversary celebration recently.

The new merged faculty will be known as “computerisation, informatics and media college”.

Alumni president Basree Rakijan said the merher would dilute the fundamental teachings of mass communication in providing vital information to the masses.

“Students of mass communication must be trained in skills practised through multiple mediums such as newspapers, magazines, radio, television, film, social media and the internet.

“These platforms require thinking and analytical skills, creativity and expertise in content creation. If at all, subjects that should be emphasised on are those related to social sciences and humanities among others.”

He said a dialogue with the alumni on the matter should have been held before a decision was made.

“Members of the alumni felt a dialogue would have led to a better understanding of the need to preserve the image and branding of the faculty which we have built over five decades.

“Our graduates had proven themselves by becoming industry leaders in the fields of printing, broadcasting, advertising, public relations, film and social media,” he said.

As of now, the alumni was planning to meet the university, its stakeholders and representatives from various organisations in the industry.
