Minister sounding like police’, PKR MP slams govt again

A Pakatan Harapan (PH) MP who openly opposed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s move to appoint Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as his deputy has penned another poem, this time training his guns on Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution’s defence of a controversial security law allowing the police to detain suspects for up to a month.

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim said the stand by Saifuddin in support of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, or Sosma, was a far cry from the protests by the coalition’s leaders.

Hassan added that those who once called Sosma draconian had now been blinded by power.

“At that time, we were just reformers on the streets, homeless.

“It’s different now; the world has changed; we are already in power,” he said in a poem posted on Facebook.

“We have started talking about detention without trial; even for almost a month is fine; for the sake of national security.”

Saifuddin came under attack from rights groups as well as at least two PH politicians after saying that the government had no intention of reviewing Sosma.

He said Sosma was unlike the abolished Internal Security Act as it allowed a person to be detained for “only 28 days”, adding that arrests were done on “reliable intelligence and evidence”.

Earlier, DAP’s Gobind Singh Deo said the remarks were against PH’s stand to abolish Sosma, while former PKR MP Maria Chin Abdullah, who was once detained under the same law, reminded Saifuddin that the act had been used against political opponents despite claims that it was to fight terrorism.

Hassan in his post said that Saifuddin was sounding like the police.

“But I who write this poem; is said to be shooting myself in the foot,” he added.

Early this month, Hassan urged Anwar to stick to his principles after the PH chairman named Zahid as a deputy prime minister despite the Umno president facing multiple corruption charges.

“Yesterday I could still hear, you said we would not trade principles for power, so I believed,” he wrote.

“Now I’m ashamed of myself, I am ashamed to say those sacred words again.

“Half of my soul is dead, I feel defeat in a victory such as this that is bereft of integrity.
