KUALA LUMPUR: Two opposition MPs have hit out at Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (PN-Bukit Gantang) for supporting the government, accusing the Bersatu man of having no integrity.

Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) claimed Syed Hussin had a “personal agenda” in supporting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and that he had an “integrity problem”.

Awang said the Bukit Gantang MP used to be in Umno but quit the party to become an independent after Barisan Nasional failed to win the 2018 general election.

“After that, he begged (Bersatu president) Muhyiddin Yassin (to allow him to join the party). Because he begged on his knees, we believed him and accepted him,” Awang said during the debate on the Supply Bill 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat.

Awang is from PAS, not Bersatu.

RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) interjected, saying Awang’s statement breached the Standing Orders as it imputed improper motives against Syed Hussin, who was not in the House at the time.

“Even though (Syed Hussin) is not a part of the government bloc, this is about legal principles, which we must defend. (Awang’s) statement (that Syed Hussin) knelt down to beg is degrading,” said the DAP MP.

Awang retracted his statement after being told to do so by Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Ramli Nor, who said his remark had nothing to do with the debate.

Later, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) also hit out at his party colleague, describing Syed Hussin’s support for Anwar as a “dishonourable act” as he had previously said he would do so for the sake of development funds.

Wan Fayhsal also urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to probe for any element of corruption in the matter.
