JOHOR BAHRU: Two 11-year-old boys and four other people died when two cars collided on the road to Kahang this evening.

The six dead were in a Perodua Myvi travelling from Kluang to Kahang when it was in a collision with a Honda Stream heading in the opposite direction.

Five other people were injured, including two in the Perodua and the driver and two passengers in the Honda, Bernama reported.

Kluang fire and rescue chief Fauzi Nor said those who died at the scene were Masrina Kahdar, 21; Zharfah Noramin, 16; Syakir Noramin, 11; Asyraf Radiq Abdullah, 11; and Adil Abdul Kadir, 23.

Another passenger in the Myvi, Siti Nurzannah Kahdar, 26, died at Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom, Kluang, last night.

Those injured in the same vehicle were Nur Annalesha Rania Arifin, 7, and Sharizan Syafandi, 24, who was the driver of the Myvi. They are being treated in the same hospital.

Also injured were the driver and passengers of the Honda, known as Zulkeflly Zakariah, 53; Kamariah Yusof, 48; and an unidentified 10-year-old girl.

A total of 52 fatal road accidents involving 58 deaths were recorded in the first four days of Op Selamat 19 conducted in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement deputy director Nasri Omar said 38 deaths involved motorcyclists and pillion riders, car drivers and passengers (14), lorry drivers and passengers (three), pedestrians (two), and a jeep driver.

“Some 33 people were seriously injured while 250 others escaped with minor injuries,” he said in a statement tonight.

A total of 7,180 accidents involving 9,198 vehicles were recorded over the past four days of the operation, with 9,653 summonses issued involving six major offences.

Of the total summonses, 3,250 were issued for beating red lights, driving exceeding the speed limit (2,785) and using a mobile phone while driving (1,316). In addition, 1,183 summonses were issued for queue-jumping, overtaking on double lines (692) and using emergency lanes (427), he said.
