KUALA LUMPUR: The government will ensure that all tenders especially for major development projects will only be awarded to bidders based on their track records and capabilities.

In his speech at the Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association’s (Rehda) 50th anniversary dinner here, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recounted how the Tender Committee made its decision for a developer of a major project.



“I told them (the Tender Committee) to come to a decision and that the companies’ name should not be made known.

“We kept to Company A, B or C. And we made our decision not knowing who (the name of the company) got the tender.

“We decided purely based on the track record and financial capabilities of the company,” he said.

Anwar in his speech however did not identify the major project he was referring to.



“I believe that this is a good start for the country. This should be the guiding principles in awarding tenders

“Because I understand more than ever that corruption in the country is endemic if it is not systemic

“It will take a lot of courage and conviction (to change the situation of the country)

“After going in and out of (the) Sungai Buloh (prison), I think I am blessed with some courage left (in the effort to eradicate corruption),” he said.



Anwar nevertheless believed that Malaysia has what it takes to be great again.

“Only through growth scenario that is convincing that we can share the benefit with the rakyat.

“That is why I proposed and espoused the Malaysia Madani concept which is inclusive.

“Enough of racism, enough of religious bigotry, enough with leaders known to be able to squander effectively for themselves, their families and cronies,” he said.



He later thanked Rehda for the role played by the association in developing the country.

“One of the pillars of any development is the construction sector and housing developers.

“You know that you have played a pivotal role (in developing the nation).”
