Jamie Carragher shares why Tottenham’s fans were right to be upset earlier this season

Jamie Carragher has said that Tottenham fans were right to be upset with Ange Postecoglou earlier on in the season.
In the main, it’s been all good and positive under Postecoglou at Tottenham and a Champions League spot is very much in their sights.
However, it’s going to be another season without a cup. Spurs were knocked out of the League Cup by Fulham back in August while Man City knocked them out of the FA Cup last month.
And writing in his latest column for The Telegraph, Jamie Carragher has said that the League Cup defeat rightly left Tottenham fans feeling angry.
Jamie Carragher says Tottenham fans right to be annoyed over cup exits
Writing about both Tottenham and Aston Villa, Carragher insisted that the weakened team picked by Tottenham at Fulham was a mistake.
“Unai Emery and Ange Postecoglou were so warmly embraced beyond their own fanbase for the team’s early season form because when the likes of Villa and Tottenham Hotspur get their act together it offers hope the status quo will be challenged. They are clubs of similar stature who keep failing in the domestic cups – winnable competitions – regardless of the strength of those who have dominated,” Carragher said.
“Villa and Spurs have both won the League Cup twice since 1993. That represents rank underperformance. It is not as though they have been beaten by the cup winners or finalists every season. That is why Spurs fans were so upset by the team selection in this year’s League Cup, and why Villa’s defeats in both cup competitions this season are a huge disappointment. When you have a good team and are in the midst of an excellent season, you have to grasp the nettle.”
Trophies matter
While the modern day narrative for the top clubs is getting into the Champions League and the riches that brings, most fans want to see their teams win.
That’s why Tottenham fans are so desperate to see a trophy come home. Yes, doing well in the league is great but they want to see some silverware.
Given Ange won everything multiple times with Celtic, he is a manager who won’t be purposely not taking certain competitions seriously.
Hopefully, for Spurs fans anyway, a cup is not too far away.
