MACC nabs 4 men, including 2 ex-officials of Kelantan water company

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested four men, including two former senior officers of a Kelantan water company, in a probe into a failed radial wells project in the state.

Harian Metro quoted a source from MACC as saying that the other two men were the owners of a company contracted as consultants for the construction of the wells.

The four men, aged 40 to 60, were arrested between 7am and 10am today. The anti-graft agency also seized several documents and mobile phones.

“The project was supposed to provide residents with adequate water supply but preliminary investigations found that it did not produce an optimum amount of water,” the source said.

The source also said this was believed to be due to corruption and mismanagement of the project.

“All the suspects were brought to the Kelantan MACC office for their statements to be recorded,” the source added.

It is understood that the investigation was initiated following complaints from residents dissatisfied with the water supply.

According to the daily, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the arrests and said the case is being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009.

The suspects would be brought to the magistrates’ court in Kota Bharu tomorrow for a remand application, he added.
