Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim said the government has not given serious attention to the private sector and informal workers grappling with issues of wages and social protection.

PETALING JAYA: Government backbenchers have reminded the unity government to keep its feet on the ground and redouble efforts to expand its support base, following Pakatan Harapan’s victory in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

PKR’s Hassan Karim said the unity government must remain humble as the coalition only saw a minimal increase in Malay support and remained unable to capture the majority of the youth votes.

He also reminded the unity government that the Indian community’s support was helped by ministers’ promises to resolve their longstanding issues, which included housing for estate workers.

“If these promises are not kept, they will punish the government and PH in the next general election,” he told FMT.

Hassan also said although the pay increment for civil servants announced earlier this month might have contributed to PH’s victory, it would likely not be useful in the 16th general election as the general populace is not a part of the civil service.

The Pasir Gudang MP said the government has not given serious attention to the private sector and informal workers grappling with issues of wages and social protection.

“It’s not wrong for the unity government’s leaders and supporters to celebrate their victory, but I advise them to be moderate in their celebrations because the general election is only 42 months away (in 2027),” he said.

On Tuesday, former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming cautioned PH not to interpret the victory of DAP’s Pang Sock Tao in Kuala Kubu Baharu as a “vote of confidence” for the coalition and the unity government.

The Selangor DAP treasurer said this would be a mistake as dissatisfaction with the government was “real and growing” among various segments of society.

He reminded his colleagues of Barisan Nasional’s comfortable victory in the 2007 Ijok by-election, and how the coalition lost control a year later of Selangor and its two-thirds majority in Parliament during the 13th general election.

Pang won last Saturday’s by-election with a majority of 3,869 votes. She polled a total of 14,000 votes, defeating Perikatan Nasional candidate Khairul Azhari Saut (10,131), Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Hafizah Zainuddin (152) and independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin (188).

The final turnout of voters was 61.5%, lower than the 69.25% recorded in Kuala Kubu Baharu in the state election last August.

Hulu Langat MP Sany Hamzan shared Hassan’s sentiments, saying PH had the advantage of being the incumbent in Kuala Kubu Baharu and being part of the federal, state and local governments.

The Amanah central committee member told Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government not to be complacent, but instead redouble efforts to communicate its initiatives to voters.

“We need to start the groundwork now and take advantage of a corruption-free government with no cases that can undermine the people’s trust in us,” he said.
