Kedah ready to sell water to Penang, says Sanusi
PETALING JAYA: The Kedah government wants to sell treated water to Penang to address the long-standing shortage faced by the residents of Nibong Tebal, particularly in the Sungai Bakap area, says Perikatan Nasional (PN) election director Sanusi Nor.
He added that Kedah has a surplus of treated water at the Lubuk Buntar water treatment plant and is prepared to sell it to Penang, Sinar Harian reported.
“We do have treated water. So, if you want to buy it, we can sell it. It has to be purchased, not taken for free as Penang is doing with the water from Sungai Muda,” he said during the launch of the PN Sungai Bakap by-election machinery in the constituency last night.
Sanusi, who is also the Kedah menteri besar, said that Penang, which extracts twice as much water as Kedah from Sungai Muda, should have enough water.
He said it was embarrassing that the Penang government, which he claimed makes a huge profit from selling water to industrial consumers, cannot resolve the water supply issue in Nibong Tebal.
“It shouldn’t be a problem because this state is small, the pipes are short and easy to maintain.
“Isn’t Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also from Penang? It is unacceptable that this state faces basic issues on water supply,” he added.
