Economy minister Rafizi Ramli’s (left) claim that former Umno man Isham Jalil rejected his invitation to debate him follows Isham’s statement on June 13 that Rafizi was ‘scared’ to take part in a debate.

PETALING JAYA: Economy minister Rafizi Ramli says former Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil has rejected his invitation to debate him on economic issues, adding that he has the “receipt”, or evidence, to prove it.

He said this in response to former law minister Zaid Ibrahim, who had told him in a post on X this morning not to give excuses to avoid meeting social media influencer “Lim Sian See”, as well as Isham and Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi.

“I wasn’t afraid to go to jail when I was exposing the 1MDB scandal. Why would I avoid doing a podcast?” Rafizi said on X tonight.

Isham had claimed in a post on Facebook on June 13 that Rafizi had declined to debate him out of fear.

He said he had posted on Facebook his response to Rafizi’s claims on the leakage of diesel subsidies overseas because of this.

“I invited you to debate, but you were scared. That’s why I wrote (my response) here,” he said in a postscript.

Rafizi first said in February that he wanted to invite “Lim”, Puad and Isham to his podcast as he was keen to hear their ideas on revitalising the economy.

On Tuesday, “Lim” said Rafizi’s camp had reached out to him last week to set an appointment in early August, which Rafizi reiterated in his post today.

Rafizi also said he would not debate Puad, an assemblyman in the unity government, and that it would be better to discuss their grievances internally.
