Umno eyes Azizi’s Nenggiri seat

PETALING JAYA: Kelantan Umno has come out to lay claim on contesting the Nenggiri state seat which was declared vacant yesterday, once the Election Commission calls for by-election.

Kelantan Umno deputy information chief Noor Hariri Mohamed Noor said former Nenggiri assemblyman, Azizi Abu Naim, who has stated his support for the federal unity government, should focus on his Gua Musang parliamentary constituency.

“It’s still too soon to speculate on who the (unity government’s) candidate will be, but it will definitely come from Umno.

“Azizi would surely understand this situation. He needs to focus on his duties as the Gua Musang MP,” Hariri told FMT.

He expressed confidence that Kelantan Umno would be able to regain the seat it lost to PAS for the first time in the state election last August.

“We have a chance to win, especially when our rivals only won with a majority of 810 votes last year,” he said.

Since its creation in 2004, the Nenggiri seat had been held by Umno until last year when Azizi, contesting on a PAS ticket, defeated its previous assemblyman, Ab Aziz Yusoff.

Aziz was first elected the Nenggiri assemblyman in 2018, when he defeated PAS’s Sidek Saupi Abd Razak with a 461-vote majority, while Pakatan Harapan’s Othman Yusoff trailed far behind with just 788 votes.

Azizi pledged support for the federal government last year but continued backing the PAS-led Kelantan government. His state seat was declared vacant yesterday by the Kelantan assembly speaker.

The Election Commission will meet next Friday to decide on a by-election date for the seat, but Azizi said he will bring the matter to court.
