Former Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar said he applied to join Bersatu yesterday and his online application was immediately approved.

PETALING JAYA: Former Tanjong Karang MP Noh Omar has joined Bersatu, more than a year after his sacking from Umno.

The former Selangor Umno chief said he applied to join Bersatu yesterday, with his online application immediately approved.

“No one else knew. I applied online and immediately received a certificate stating that I am a Bersatu member,” he told FMT.

Noh was a six-term MP for Tanjong Karang but was dropped as a Barisan Nasional candidate during the 15th general election to make way for Tanjong Karang Wanita Umno chief Habibah Yusof. She lost to Perikatan Nasional’s Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi.

After BN’s dismal performance in GE15, Noh had called for Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down.

Noh was the entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister in Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s Cabinet and held the housing and local government as well as agriculture portfolios in Najib Razak’s Cabinet.

Most recently, he was appointed deputy president of the NGO Muafakat Nasional, founded by fellow former Umno leader Annuar Musa.

The NGO bears the same name as the alliance between Umno and PAS formalised in 2019 but which eventually fell apart.

Meanwhile, Noh apologised to his friends in Umno and BN for joining Bersatu, but maintained it was the right thing to do to reject Umno’s partnership with DAP.

He expressed his belief that Bersatu and PN could soon replace Umno and BN.

However, he said another reason for his decision to join Bersatu was because he was disappointed that Najib could not serve the rest of his jail sentence under house arrest.

Noh said Najib previously advised him not to join another party after being sacked from Umno and that he followed the former Pekan MP’s advice out of respect for him.

“Since Najib’s application was unsuccessful, I’ve decided to join Bersatu,” he said, adding that he hoped other Umno leaders disappointed with Najib’s situation would follow suit.
