No working with PAS as long as Hadi is president, says Zahid

PETALING JAYA: Umno will not work with PAS as long as Abdul Hadi Awang remains the president of the Islamic party, says Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The Umno president said past experience working with PAS drove him to make this stand, claiming the two parties had made “joint agreements” which were not followed by Hadi’s party, Sinar Harian reported.

“PAS has been lying from the past until now. I am a living witness. I’ve had face-to-face discussions with Hadi where he states his agreement on something in front of us, but changes his stand the next day.

“As long as that person is their party president, don’t trust them. Do not expect us to cooperate with a party that exploits Islam,” he was quoted as telling delegates at Kuala Kangsar Umno’s annual general meeting today.

Umno and PAS used to be allies under the short-lived Muafakat Nasional charter which was formalised in 2019, when Pakatan Harapan was the government.

Ties started to sour after PAS established Perikatan Nasional with Bersatu. Muafakat Nasional ended after Barisan Nasional formed the unity government with Pakatan Harapan, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.

Zahid also said his colleagues from PH were sincere in cooperating within the government and in political work.

The BN chairman said this could be seen through the collaboration between BN and PH in several by-elections now.

He said that when the Perak unity government was formed, PH insisted that a BN man be appointed the menteri besar though BN only had nine state seats compared to PH’s 24.
