Bersatu polls will likely see no contest for top posts, says Muhyiddin
SELAYANG: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin says he does not expect the party’s top posts to be contested in the party polls this October, following negotiations among the leadership.
He said a motion had been tabled several months ago asking him to intervene and negotiate the matter to prevent any division within the party.
“This shows a spirit of give and take among the top leadership,” he said in his speech at the party’s convention at the Ideal Convention Centre here today.
Muhyiddin said a formal announcement on the matter will be made before candidates are nominated.
The deputy president’s post is expected to be the highlight of Bersatu’s elections this October, after Muhyiddin had previously confirmed that he will remain as party president.

Ahmad Faizal Azumu, who has held the post since 2020, is expected to be challenged by secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin under articles 14.14 and 14.16 of the party’s constitution.
Last month, Bersatu announced that members wishing to contest the October elections must apply to the Supreme Council as per the said articles.
Hamzah was previously not eligible to contest for any of the top five posts as he had not served two terms as a Supreme Council member, as required under the party’s constitution.
Meanwhile, at least 10 leaders are said to be eyeing the three vice-president posts, including information chief Razali Idris, Supreme Council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan, Saifuddin Abdullah and Rafiq Abdullah.
Putrajaya MP Radzi Jidin and Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee are expected to defend their vice-president posts. The remaining vice-president’s post has been vacant since Rafiq Naizamohideen quit the party in October 2022, just weeks before the 15th general election.
Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin is expected to challenge Rina Harun for the Wanita chief’s post, while Gombak Setia assemblyman Hilman Idham is likely to challenge Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal for the Youth chief’s post.
