Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan said the matter could be reviewed before the next general election, taking into account Umno’s strength.

PETALING JAYA: Umno is not tied to any alliance with other parties for the coming general election, says party deputy president Mohamad Hasan.

“We only agreed to form the current government to administer the nation. This is because we need a stable and solid government,” Mohamad said when opening the annual meeting of the Tenggara Umno division, headed by Dr Adham Baba.

However, he said the matter could be reviewed before the 16th general election, based on Umno’s strength and number of seats the party had previously won, Sinar Harian reported.

Ready to defend party post

Mohamad said he is ready to defend his position as deputy president if the party’s highest posts are contested at the 2026 Umno elections.

He said party positions, even at branch level, should be contested in a healthy manner, without causing divisions. “I will defend it, we will fight together; win or lose, that is the spirit of competition commonly practiced in a healthy democracy,” he said.

In January last year, Umno delegates at the party’s 2022 general assembly supported a motion that there should be no contests for the posts of president and deputy president.
