Umno should push to replace Johari with fairer speaker, says Zaid
PETALING JAYA: Umno should push for Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul to be replaced by someone who is fairer, says former law minister Zaid Ibrahim.
In a post on X today, Zaid addressed Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan and vice-president Johari Ghani’s comments about the speaker’s decision not to vacate the seats held by six former Bersatu MPs.
“No law or regulation can replace ethical conduct. The proper functioning of government institutions, including Parliament, can only happen when officials are honourable and honest in discharging their duties and responsibilities.
“No legislation or policy changes can replace this,” he said.
Yesterday, Mohamad proposed holding recall elections if the government does not amend the anti-hopping law to ensure that legislative seats be vacated if the elected representatives pledge support to parties other than their own.

He said recall elections could be held when MPs or assemblymen are not aligned with the party on whose ticket they were elected.
Mohamad said the voters in that area can hold a referendum on recalling the MP, and if they get more than 50% support, the seat has to be vacated and an election held again.
Johari Ghani had also called for the anti-hopping law to be tightened to prevent abuse by party-hopping politicians.
“If there are technical issues or shortcomings in the law, we need to address and rectify them, if necessary. We should not encourage this practice of party hopping,” he said.
Zaid said it was about time for Umno to “behave like Sarawak” and put its foot down on matters important to the country.

“It is good that both Umno leaders have spoken, but the remedy is quite simple: choose another person who is disposed to be fair as speaker. If Umno feels strongly about the issue, the Madani leadership will have no choice but to allow Parliament to elect another speaker,” he said.
Johari Abdul has received flak from both civil society and politicians for his decision, with Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin saying the “disappointing” move clearly went against the written and implied provisions of Article 49A(3) of the Federal Constitution.
Muhyiddin said Bersatu will appoint lawyers to challenge the decision in court.
Electoral watchdog Bersih also said the speaker had erred in his understanding of the anti-hopping legislation’s mechanism and disregarded its principles, which could lead to political instability.
