Pendang MP kicked out of Dewan for calling Rayer ‘anti-Islam’

KUALA LUMPUR: Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) was removed from the Dewan Rakyat today for refusing to retract a remark describing RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) as anti-Islam.

Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Ramli Nor gave Awang three chances to retract his statement, but the MP said he stood by his principles.

Ramli subsequently suspended Awang from attending Dewan Rakyat proceedings for three days.

“I’m sorry, but I will not retract my remarks because he is anti-Islam,” Awang said.

Awang had said Rayer was anti-Islam as he was from DAP, which he claimed “defends gamblers”. Awang claimed that this disrespected the rights of Muslims, who form about 70% of the population in the state.

In November 2021, DAP went to court to challenge Kedah’s refusal to renew gaming licences, a decision it said was liable to be quashed by the High Court upon an application for judicial review.

This came after Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor announced a ban on gaming outlets throughout the state by ordering local councils not to renew their annual business licences.

A short reprieve was given, with licences not to be renewed after Dec 31, 2022, as federal approval for 4D shops was in effect until then.

Gaming outlets stopped operating in Kedah in 2023 following the state government’s decision.

On June 20, the Alor Setar High Court ruled that the state government’s decision not to issue or renew the licences of gaming premises was unconstitutional.

The court ordered the Kedah government, the menteri besar, the Alor Setar city council and the city’s mayor to compensate gaming operators for losses suffered from the ban.
