Umno and Bersatu cannot co-exist, says Salleh
PETALING JAYA: Former Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak has rejected the possibility of his party working with Bersatu, saying the two Malay-Muslim parties cannot co-exist.
Salleh, a former federal minister, said Umno and Barisan Nasional’s main political objective should be to regain every seat it had lost to Bersatu in the 15th general election in November 2022.
“Umno and Bersatu cannot co-exist. One has to get rid of the other. Any talk of political cooperation between Umno and Bersatu is not an option.
“We have to focus our political resources on winning back the seats lost to Bersatu at the next general election,” said Salleh, a former Sabah chief minister, in a Facebook post.
Umno put up its worst electoral performance in a general election in GE15, winning only 27 seats and 31% of the popular vote.

It suffered a similarly dismal performance in the six state elections last August, winning only 19 of the 108 seats contested.
Umno and PAS were allies under Muafakat Nasional, which eventually fell apart with Umno refusing PAS’s repeated requests for Bersatu to be included in the fold. PAS had formed Perikatan Nasional with Bersatu.
Last week, former Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar, who recently joined Bersatu, called for Umno and Bersatu to look for ways to work together and revive MN with PAS.
Meanwhile, Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said Bersatu was established with the goal of eliminating Umno but had so far failed to achieve this.
“Therefore, it is appropriate for Umno to respond by seeking to eliminate Bersatu.
“It’s not impossible, Semangat 46 (co-founded by Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah in 1989 amid the open split in Umno) returned to Umno in the end,” he said.
Puad said now was the best time to get rid of Bersatu as it did not hold power and seemed to be in disarray, citing the six former Bersatu MPs who declared support for the government.
