2 narratives for Umno to regain Malay support, says ex-treasurer
PETALING JAYA: A former Umno treasurer says the party must choose between two existing narratives if it wants to regain the support of Malay voters at the next general election.
Salleh Said Keruak said one narrative was that the Malays were indebted to Umno for its role in securing independence from the British in 1957, as well as the special assistance the community had received.
He said the second narrative was that Umno was indebted to the Malays for giving it a chance to administer the country for 60 years.
“I am confident that if we take the correct approach and adopt the right attitude, we will be able to attract the Malays back to the party and restore the confidence they once had in Umno,” the Usukan assemblyman said in a Facebook post.
Malay support for Umno has been on the decline since the 13th general election. Its umbrella coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) was toppled at the following election in 2018, marking the end of its six-decade reign.

The 15th general election in 2022 saw Umno registering its worst electoral performance, winning just 27 seats and 31% of the popular vote.
It also performed poorly at the six state elections last August, where it won only 19 of the 108 seats it contested.
Earlier this month, FMT quoted James Chin of University of Tasmania as saying that Pakatan Harapan’s defeat in the Sungai Bakap by-election was a sign that Umno had lost its appeal among the Malays in Penang.
On Monday, Salleh said the main political objective of Umno and BN should be to regain every seat lost to Bersatu at the 2022 polls.
