Azalina Othman Said said Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal should have checked with the minister in charge before speaking on the poison-pen letter in the Dewan Rakyat as though it was verified.

KUALA LUMPUR: The six-month suspension of Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) from the Dewan Rakyat is a reminder to all MPs to be responsible when making statements in the House, says Azalina Othman Said.

The law and institutional reform minister, who tabled the motion to suspend the Bersatu MP, said the immunity granted to MPs does not give them free rein to make false statements during debates in Parliament.

“If you refer to legitimate documents, then there’s no problem, but don’t refer to poison-pen letters because that will open the floodgates for all MPs to follow suit. With the use of AI (artificial intelligence) now, it’s hard to know what is true or false.

“Our responsibility (as MPs) is to enact laws, not to make accusations based on poison-pen letters. If we don’t make this stand, we will promote a bad culture among MPs, among both government and opposition MPs,” she said when tabling the motion earlier.

Azalina said it was the job of MPs to verify the facts of such letters first, adding that Wan Fayhsal could have checked with the minister in charge, the relevant agency, or filed a police report first.

“If (Wan Fayhsal) were to have asked (in the Dewan Rakyat) for confirmation whether the letter is legitimate or not, then there would be no problem. You qualified your statement. But the matter has gone viral, as though the letter is confirmed,” she said.

Wan Fayhsal was suspended for referencing a poison-pen letter naming the alleged mastermind of the Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) privatisation deal.

He is said to have referred to the letter when debating the Suhakam report in the Dewan Rakyat earlier this month.

He had named an EPF employee as being allegedly involved in the takeover and cited the negative treatment of the employee’s subordinates.

He was suspended after a bloc vote in which 110 MPs voted in favour of the motion and 63 voted against. Three MPs abstained while 46 were absent.
