PETALING JAYA: Umno’s bid to demand the Alor Setar parliamentary seat in the next general election is not yet final, says Kedah Pakatan Harapan.

Kedah PH chairman Mahfuz Omar said the demand is merely a proposal as the final decision would only be made after negotiations.

“Even parties in PH can propose and claim certain seats, but these are just suggestions,” he told FMT.

“The ultimate decision will be made after negotiations are held and will be finalised by the central leadership.”

Mahfuz said the proposal, made at Alor Setar Umno’s annual general meeting today, is part of the party’s open democratic process and is not a binding decision.

Earlier today, Alor Setar Umno passed a resolution to demand that the parliamentary seat and one of the state seats under the constituency be allotted to the party.

Kedah Umno chief Mahdzir Khalid said there was no issue with the Alor Setar division making this demand and denied it would create a rift within the unity government.

He said it would instead strengthen Barisan Nasional (BN) ahead of the next general election.

In GE15, PN’s Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden won the Alor Setar parliamentary seat with a majority of 9,931 votes, defeating PH’s Simon Ooi (27,555 votes) and BN’s Tan Chee Hiong (8,930 votes).

In GE14, PH won the seat with a majority of more than 15,000 votes.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi previously said that for areas not won by the parties in the unity government in the general or state elections, the formula would be for the party with the second highest number of votes to contest.

Meanwhile, Kedah PKR chairman Nor Azrina Surip @ Nurin Aina Abdullah advised parties against rushing to demand certain seats, stating that this was premature as GE16 is still a few years away.

“It’s not the right time to discuss seat allocations although it’s not wrong for political parties to have aspirations and intentions to contest certain seats,” she said.

“The ultimate goal of entering an election is to win and subsequently be able to help the people.”
