PAS must drop conditions to revive MN, says Umno veteran

PETALING JAYA: The collaboration between Umno and PAS through Muafakat Nasional (MN) could be revived if PAS drops the condition that Umno must accept Bersatu as a partner, says a veteran Umno leader.

Yussof Latiff said the Umno and PAS collaboration under MN ended due to “unacceptable terms” imposed by PAS.

“PAS needs to reflect on itself. If it sets conditions for Umno within MN, it must also accept Amanah,” Utusan Malaysia quoted Yussof as saying in Penang.

“If PAS cannot accept Amanah, it should not impose terms on Umno.”

Amanah, a splinter party from PAS, is collaborating with Umno under the unity government. The two parties had been at odds despite sharing similar political and religious ideologies.

Yussof described PAS’s demand for Umno to accept Bersatu while rejecting Amanah themselves, as “one-sided”.

“How can we accept such an unfair condition?” he said.

MN was eventually dissolved due to Umno’s refusal to include Bersatu in the coalition. Subsequently, PAS formed Perikatan Nasional with Bersatu.

Earlier this month, former Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar, who recently joined Bersatu, urged Umno and Bersatu to explore ways to collaborate and revive MN with PAS.

However, Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi rejected this notion, saying Bersatu was established with the goal of eliminating Umno.

On Monday, former Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak also dismissed the possibility of his party working with Bersatu, saying the two Malay-Muslim parties cannot co-exist.
