Umno strategically positioned to prepare for GE16, says Azalina
PETALING JAYA: Umno, one of the key parties in the unity government, is strategically positioned as the party starts preparing for the next general election (GE16), says Azalina Othman Said.
The party information chief, who officiated Bukit Mertajam Umno’s annual general meeting this morning, said Umno’s current position enables the party to bolster its support ahead of GE16.
“During my speech to officiate the division’s meeting, I reminded party members that we are in a strategic position to strengthen the party as we prepare to face GE16.
“In my capacity as Umno information chief, I touched on various current issues and also shared several strategies in facing the current communication landscape, which is challenging given the emergence of artificial intelligence.
“I hope that what I shared would revive the spirits of my party colleagues, to join with the top Umno leadership as we endeavour to restore the glory of this party,” she said in a post on X.

Malay support for Umno has been on the decline since the 13th general election. Its umbrella coalition Barisan Nasional was toppled at the following elections in 2018, marking the end of its six-decade reign.
The 15th general election in 2022 saw Umno registering its worst electoral performance, winning just 27 seats and 31% of the popular vote.
BN formed the unity government with Pakatan Harapan, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and several other parties after GE15 saw no single party attaining a simple majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
While BN has yet to make an official decision on alliances for GE16, its chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has repeatedly said the coalition would continue its cooperation with PH in the next general election.
However, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has said BN could go solo in the future once Umno has restored its strength.
He said Umno’s priority now must be to strengthen and rejuvenate the party.
