PETALING JAYA: A political analyst believes it will be impossible for PAS, Bersatu, and Umno to cooperate at the next general election (GE16) unless they set aside their egos.

Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya told FMT that the three parties needed to work towards finding a common ground if they were to forge any alliance for the next nationwide election.

He also said such cooperation should not be limited to these three parties but should include fellow Malay-Muslim party Amanah, a Pakatan Harapan component.

“They should then move forward by supporting the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also a big part of the (country’s) Malay leadership,” he said.

Last Monday, PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari claimed that Umno leaders had met with the Islamic party on several occasions to discuss an alliance for the next general election.

However, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there had been no official discussions or meetings between Umno and PAS on cooperation ahead of GE16.

Bersatu information chief Razali Idris later said the party was not suspicious of PAS, its ally in Perikatan Nasional (PN), but rather welcomed such cooperation for the sake of Malay unity.

Meanwhile, Azmi Hassan from the National Council of Professors said the issue of overlapping seats between Umno and Bersatu would be the deal-breaker for any alliance between all three parties.

He also said Bersatu had reacted positively to claims of informal talks between Umno and PAS as it might not want to be seen as unwilling to support efforts to unite Malay parties.

However, he said Bersatu would likely be concerned about such an alliance due to its dependence on PAS.

“Umno does not need Bersatu because there will be seat overlaps. Bersatu will become irrelevant if the Umno-PAS cooperation in a Muafakat Nasional (MN) 2.0 succeeds.”

The original MN was a short-lived political alliance between PAS and Umno which ended in December 2022.

Both PAS and Umno had accused each other of neglecting the charter they founded almost five years ago.

Relations between the two parties have been tense since PAS joined the Bersatu-led PN, with PAS also desiring the participation of Bersatu, an Umno splinter party, in MN.
