PUTRAJAYA: Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil has described Ambiga Sreenevasan’s criticism of Putrajaya over its move to impose new licensing laws for social media platforms as an “exaggeration”, saying her comments do not reflect reality.

While acknowledging the former Bersih chairman’s right to voice her opinions, Fahmi said her criticism might be misdirected and she should focus instead on the actions of previous administrations.

“That statement is hyperbolic. It does not reflect reality.

“This government did not conduct Ops Lalang. This government did not take action to beat up demonstrators,” he told a press conference here today.

Ambiga had claimed that the unity government is the “most dictatorial in the country’s history” for not abolishing the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, and introducing new licensing requirements instead.

Fahmi also pointed out that during a recent protest in Tambun, demonstrators were provided with water and bread rather than being met with force.

“I invite her to review the history, including previous Bersih rallies she led, and see how protesters were treated then. That situation does not exist now, and perhaps her criticism is misdirected and should be aimed at previous leaders,” he said.

Launched on Oct 27, 1987 while Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the prime minister, Ops Lalang saw 119 civil society activists, intellectuals and opposition politicians detained without trial under the now-repealed Internal Security Act.

Among those detained were politicians Karpal Singh, Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng, Mahfuz Omar, Mohamad Sabu, Khalid Samad and Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, social activists Chandra Muzaffar and Meenakshi Raman, and unionist V David.

Similarly, past Bersih rallies, which called for electoral reforms, often faced tear gas, water cannons, and mass arrests.

Bersih 3.0 in 2012 witnessed significant clashes between protesters and the police, with numerous reports of injuries and excessive force.
