BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi warned other unity government coalition partners against lobbying to contest the Mahkota state seat in Johor.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate will represent the unity coalition in the by-election for the Mahkota state seat on Sept 28, says its chairman, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid, who is also Umno president, warned other unity government coalition partners not to demand to contest the state seat.

“I do not want any statements from leaders, whether high-ranking or otherwise, demanding any seat be allocated (to their party) or making remarks that could ultimately create an unwelcome perception,” he told a press conference here.

Kluang Amanah had previously lobbied for the Mahkota seat, which was held by the late Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain of Umno, prompting brickbats from several Umno leaders.

Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong then said the party would uphold the principle of incumbency, signalling support for Umno to defend the seat in the by-election.

Amanah Youth executive council member Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda later said he was determined to push for the candidate to come from their party as the Johor government was not a unity government.

Last Thursday, Zahid took a swipe at Kluang Amanah over its demand to contest the Mahkota seat, saying that parties in the unity government should not demand seats that did not belong to them.

Yesterday, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu reminded the party’s Kluang division that it was the national leadership that would decide on election candidates.

Zahid today said that in preparation for the Mahkota by-election, discussions would be held with Umno’s political bureau and Supreme Council before the matter was brought to the unity government’s secretariat meeting.

He also said the understanding within the unity government coalition partners was to uphold the principle of incumbency.

“We have a good chance of winning the Mahkota constituency and we certainly want to ensure coordination with all political parties within the unity government,” he added.

The Election Commission has set the Mahkota by-election for Sept 28, with nominations to be held on Sept 14 and early voting on Sept 24.
