Many other things to be touchy about, Zaid tells Umno Youth over comic book decision
KUALA LUMPUR: Instead of being overly sensitive on petty issues, Umno Youth should focus their sensitive antennae on truly abhorrent matters, says Datuk Zaid Ibrahim (pic).
The former law minister said Umno Youth appears to want to implement a legal principle that prioritises protecting the sensitivities of the majority.
“They are upset with the Court of Appeal’s decision to revoke the ban on Mr Hew’s (former DAP member Hew Kuan Yau) comic book,” he said on X, formerly Twitter.
Zaid said fortunately the country has judges who always apply the correct principle, whether the impugned act would cause public disorder before a ban was justified.
He said it has to be sufficiently provocative that reasonable men would go marching on the streets after reading the comics.

In July 2022, the Court of Appeal had ruled that the comic book titled “Belt and Road Initiative for Win-Winism” did not disturb public order and held that the ban should be lifted.
The government tried to reinstate the ban; however, on Dec 8 of same year, the Federal Court turned down the application for leave to reinstate the ban on the comics.
Following this, the revocation of the ban was signed by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and was placed in a Federal Government gazette dated Aug 12 of this year.
