Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said appointing an assemblyman from Amanah will show that Umno is sincere in wanting to build trust with its PH allies.

PETALING JAYA: The Umno-led Johor government should consider appointing an assemblyman from Amanah as a gesture of goodwill to help ease tensions between the two parties, an analyst said.

Umno and Amanah, which are part of the unity government at the federal level, are both eyeing the Mahkota state seat, which fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman earlier this month.

Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said the by-election on Sept 28 would be a litmus test for the unity government in terms of cooperation, especially when it comes to resolving tussles for seats.

Issues related to seat allocations can spark problems between allies as each party would want to contest them to ensure their “survival”, he said.

“Appointing an assemblyman (from Amanah) would show that Umno is sincere in wanting to build trust with its allies in Pakatan Harapan. It is most likely the best way to ease tensions,” he told FMT.

Earlier this month, Amanah’s Kluang division voiced its intention to field a candidate for the by-election, days after Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain’s passing.

This led to Johor Umno Youth chief Noor Azleen Ambros accusing the Amanah division of being “rash and greedy” as well as being insensitive and disrespectful to Sharifah’s family.

In response, Amanah Youth leader Fadhli Umar Aminolhuda said he would push the party to contest the seat even if it meant standing against Umno, as the Johor government was not a unity government.

Yesterday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said a candidate from Barisan Nasional would be fielded for the by-election. He also warned other unity government coalition partners not to demand to contest the seat.

Mazlan dismissed the possibility of Amanah grassroots sabotaging the campaign, citing their loyalty to their allies.

Meanwhile, National Council of Professors fellow Azmi Hassan felt that Amanah had lobbied for the state seat as they were unhappy that they were not part of the state government.

However, he said Amanah should be the “bigger man” and let Umno contest the seat since it had contributed to Amanah’s victory at the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections last year.

“Based on the principle of incumbency, BN should defend the seat as it defeated PH in the 2022 state election,” he said.

Two years ago, Sharifah had defeated Taqiuddin Cheman of PH with a 5,166-vote majority.
