Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh said she does not have time to sit on massage chairs and do podcasts, in a swipe at Khairy Jamaluddin, who regularly hosts the Keluar Sekejap podcast.

PETALING JAYA: Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh today slammed Khairy Jamaluddin for telling her to be more proactive instead of passing the buck, particularly over the Malaysian contingent’s performance in the Paris Olympics.

Yeoh claimed that Khairy, a former youth and sports minister, had implied that she should interfere in the affairs of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).

She said the OCM, whose office-holders were elected by its members, was accorded complete independence and autonomy to develop, promote and protect Malaysia’s “Olympic movement” in line with the Olympic Charter.

“As a former lawyer and (Selangor state assembly) speaker, I understand the concept of separation of powers and respecting institutional boundaries.

“I stand by my conviction and will defend what I believe is right. Doing so is not ‘tai chi’ (slang for passing the buck). It is called good governance,” she said in an Instagram post.

The minister said the OCM’s constitution outlined that the council was to resist any pressure it might face that could prevent it from complying with the Olympic Charter.

Yeoh added that breaching the charter would see the OCM lose funding from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) while Malaysian athletes could be banned from taking part in IOC-sanctioned events.

“Don’t mistake my silence for weakness. My apologies, as I just do not have time to sit on massage chairs and do podcasts.

“Lots to do to improve sports and empower youth. Back to work.”

During the latest Keluar Sekejap episode, Khairy had said Yeoh should be more proactive and dare to take on “big beasts” in national sporting associations, instead of acting like a “tai chi minister”.

The former Umno Youth chief said it was not enough for the youth and sports minister to say the OCM was elected by its own members, which he described as essentially passing the buck.

“You are the minister. If a sports minister becomes a dwarf in terms of presence and does not dare face the big beasts in sports associations, then you will be stepped all over.

“And your excuse would be that you couldn’t do anything.

“I read the minister’s (Yeoh) statement, where she said she could only tackle what’s within her control. That’s not good enough,” he had said, according to Malaysiakini.

Khairy had cited a Facebook post by Yeoh, where she said one of her goals as minister was to place the right people in the right positions.

She had said it was within her powers to appoint people to some of these positions but others were subject to election by association members.

“I do not have power to remove those elected by others. That is done through a democratic process and we must respect that. I can only remove those I appoint,” she had said.
