Umno ‘will not step an inch back’ on protecting Malay-Muslim rights, says Azalina

PETALING JAYA: Umno will never compromise on its goal of championing Malay-Muslim rights even though the party is seen as playing a “complementary” role in the ruling coalition, says its information chief Azalina Othman Said.

Azalina said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also deputy prime minister, and other Umno ministers will ensure that the party remains focused on its struggles in the current administration.

“We will not step an inch back and allow our struggles to be demolished.

“Our ongoing agenda is to develop the Malay-Muslim community’s well-being without sidelining other communities,” she said in a statement.

Azalina, who is also law and institutional reform minister, said the party’s direction is to ensure the future of the Malay-Muslim community, based on the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara.

She said Umno would not resort to acts of extreme religious rhetoric, such as labelling political opponents as “dajjal”.

“Anger and emotion are not only difficult to manage but also distract us from protecting the interests of race, religion, and country,” she said.

Azalina also said Umno will continue its role as the “fortress” of the Malay-Muslim community and provide visionary leadership.

She said Umno will act according to the rule of law, in alignment with the Rukun Negara’s calls to not act beyond national and humanitarian interests.

“The rule of law as enshrined in the Federal Constitution needs to be respected, to avoid slowing down the country’s development. The law does not discriminate against one’s politics, religion or class,” she added.
