KLUANG: Perikatan Nasional expects to unveil its candidate for the Mahkota by-election early next month, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

The Bersatu central committee member said this was to let the candidate start groundwork early in the Johor state constituency, which has some 66,300 voters.“In the past, we would only announce our candidate about two days before Nomination Day.

“However, I was informed that this time, we will make the announcement sooner as the number of voters here is quite high.

“We expect to reveal the name of our candidate after National Day, somewhere in early September,” he told a press conference here on Thursday (Aug 29) after attending a meeting on preparations for the by-election.

“We have received the three names endorsed by Johor Perikatan and have handed them to coalition chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

“We will be having a meeting to decide on the candidate,” he added.

It was reported earlier that Johor Perikatan submitted three names to its central leadership for the by-election.

The Election Commission has set Sept 28 as polling day, with nominations on Sept 14 and early voting on Sept 24.

The seat fell vacant after the death of incumbent Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.

Sharifah Azizah, a former Johor Wanita Umno chief, won with a majority of 5,166 votes in the March 2022 state election.
