PETALING JAYA: Fishermen in Sungai Batu, Penang, claim they have had to face an extreme buildup of silt along the coastline since last month.

They are attributing this situation to the ongoing 930ha Silicon Island reclamation project.

Sungai Batu fishermen unit chief Zakaria Ismail said they have seen a decline in their catch since the reclamation project began.

He complained that the buildup of silt, up to one-metre thick, had frequently trapped boats on the shore.

“In August alone, Sungai Batu fishermen could only venture out to sea for 10 days due to storms and the siltation problem.

“The Sungai Batu fishing unit will contact the environment department to urgently demand an investigation to identify the real cause of this problem.

“Related authorities such as the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia, fisheries department and state executive councillor Fahmi Zainol should take appropriate action,” he said in a statement.

Zakaria also called for the Silicon Island project to be temporarily halted until a full investigation into the issue is conducted.

Work on the RM8.5 billion reclamation project began in September last year, with 920ha to be reclaimed for the creation of the Silicon Island, touted as the electronic industry’s new hinterland.

In March, the Penang Infrastructure Corporation said more than 90% of eligible fishermen had registered for the project’s social impact management plan.

This would see them receiving ex-gratia payment, provision of new boats and engines, upskilling training, jobs and business opportunities.

In July, the George Town High Court rejected a judicial review of the project brought by two NGOs and seven fishermen, including Zakaria.
