Former BN secretary-general Annuar Musa said a bigger majority was possible because of the new political alignment of BN and PH.

PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional should retain the Mahkota state seat in Johor with a bigger majority at the by-election later this month, according to PAS deputy election chief Annuar Musa, who is a former BN secretary-general.

Annuar Musa, who was sacked by Umno almost two years ago, said BN would be able to secure more than 30,000 votes as the coalition had mobilised its federal and state election machinery.

“This makes Mahkota a stronghold for BN, Pakatan Harapan and the Madani government in Johor,” Annuar said in a Facebook post.

Annuar also cited the outcome of the previous state election to back his claim that BN would be able to retain the seat.

In the 2022 state assembly election, BN’s Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain won with a 5,166-vote majority over PH’s Taqiuddin Cheman of Amanah.

Perikatan Nasional only managed 7,614 votes in 2022, while BN and PH secured over 20,000 votes combined.

Sharifah secured 16,611 votes, while Taqiuddin garnered 11,445 votes.

Annuar said: “BN’s majority would definitely be more than 20,000 and it is because of their new political alignment in the unity government.”

The Mahkota seat fell vacant following Sharifah’s death on Aug 2. Nomination will be held on Sept 14, and polling is fixed for Sept 28.

BN named Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussein Syed Abdullah as its candidate yesterday. PN may unveil its candidate on Tuesday.
