PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has been told not to proceed with its plan to require all internet service providers (ISPs) to implement public domain name service (DNS) redirection by the end of this month.

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said the decision was made after considering the feedback received through a series of engagements MCMC conducted with the general public.

“(Based on these), I have requested that MCMC not proceed with the implementation of the DNS redirection,” he said in a post on X.

However, he said MCMC would continue to engage with all stakeholders to gather their feedback and suggestions to achieve the shared objective of a “safer internet”.

“Issues of online crimes, including access to gambling sites, pornography, and those promoting prostitution, are highly concerning and require a comprehensive solution.

“The government will not compromise on this issue to ensure online safety for Malaysians, particularly children and families,” he added.

MCMC yesterday brushed off accusations that they were resorting to draconian measures to regulate internet traffic via the plan to implement DNS redirection.

The internet regulator claimed only malicious sites were blocked while legitimate websites remained accessible.

There have been some complaints about the DNS redirection in recent days. Among those who complained was health think tank Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy which said the move had caused problems with access to its website.

Some internet users also took to social media to complain that the DNS redirection resulted in access to a game site being blocked and their inability to download VPN (virtual private network) applications.

Fahmi previously defended the plan, saying it was intended to prevent access to harmful sites, especially porn and online gambling.

Fears were also expressed of disruptions to system and software updates that required access to secure DNS servers.

A petition against the DNS redirection has also been started.

DNS servers direct internet traffic by providing the route from the user to the target website. Some users choose to use third-party DNS servers such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) for faster speeds and other benefits.

However, MCMC had planned for all DNS queries to be redirected to the DNS servers of local ISPs starting from Sept 30.
