After £51m Martin Zubimendi saga, another midfielder now suggests he rejected Liverpool this summer

It was a well documented fact that Liverpool tried to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad during the summer transfer window.

In case you missed it, Liverpool were ready to pay Zubimendi’s £51m price tag, although the Spain international decided to remain with his boyhood club in San Sebastien.

Now, another midfielder has suggested he too rejected a move to Liverpool this summer in addition to Martin Zubimendi

Teun Koopmeiners suggests he rejected Liverpool

Teun Koopmeiners has now been speaking to the media after moving to Juventus – who recently signed the Dutchman in a £51m move from Atalanta.

However – judging by reports – it seems the Italian giants may have fended off Liverpool to sign the Netherlands international.

A story from Tutto Mercato Web claimed that Koopmeiners was a key target for Arne Slot at Liverpool – as the Dutch tactician previously worked alongside the midfielder at AZ Alkmaar.

A piece from TEAMtalk added that Liverpool were considering a late bid for Koopmeiners after missing out on Zubimendi.

Now, the new Juventus No.8 has hinted that interest from Liverpool was genuine, but he only ever had eyes on a move to Turin.

Fabrizio Romano quotes Koopmeiners as saying: “Maybe yes, other clubs were interested in me this summer… but I was only interested in Juventus.”

Liverpool showed interest in the man from Castricum after he scored 15 goals and provided seven assists in 51 appearances last season – helping Atalanta win the UEFA Europa League.

Martin Zubimendi could still join

Koopmeiners has signed a five-year contract with Juventus, so the 26-year-old seems unlikely to leave the Allianz Stadium anytime soon.

However, Liverpool could end up signing Zubimendi in 2025 – with interest from the Reds still present.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who told the Men in Blazers podcast: “They prefer to wait and try again for Zubimendi or another player in that position at another moment of the market, maybe in January, maybe next summer.”

Liverpool have previously played the long game when it comes to primary targets, such as Virgil van Dijk, so be sure to keep an eye on this situation heading into 2025.
