TEMERLOH: PAS is confident of winning Pahang in the next general election (GE16) and making it the fifth state to be governed by the Islamic party, says its deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

Tuan Ibrahim said this was why PAS’s top leadership decided to choose Pahang as the venue for its 70th muktamar.

“We decided to hold this year’s muktamar in Pahang as a signal that the state is ready to join the four states governed by PAS,” he said, referring to Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Terengganu.

“PAS has 43 parliamentary seats and 105 state seats, but we need to focus on the work at hand in order to face the challenges ahead of us. We must not be complacent with our success (in winning so many seats).

“Our success today is the result of seeds planted 10 to 20 years ago, and the seeds we plant today, will bear fruit in 10 to 20 years from now,” he said when officiating PAS Youth’s muktamar at the Al-Makmur Complex in Kerdau here tonight.

The Pahang opposition leader also called for a paradigm shift in PAS Youth, particularly that it should focus on wooing the support of non-Malays so that the Islamic party can helm the federal government.

“We have the support of the majority of Malays in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis, but we must admit our weakness which we need to overcome, namely the lack of support in non-Malay areas, the southern parts of the peninsula, as well as Sabah and Sarawak.

“To lead the federal government, we cannot just focus on our work in states where we are strong,” he said.

The Kubang Kerian MP claimed that the party had been the victim of slander by its rivals, resulting in the non-Malays fearing PAS although it had been part of Malaysia’s political scene for 70 years.

“They are afraid to approach us because of the excessive slander. We are painted as an extreme party; they paint the ‘green wave’ as something that is dangerous to the nation, that will destabilise the country and threaten their freedom of religion.

“So we need to show them the reality of PAS’s administration in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis,” he said.
