PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party’s Sabah and Sarawak chapters might need to have autonomy to devise their own strategies in their respective states.

TEMERLOH: PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man says it may be time that autonomy be granted to the party’s chapters in Sabah and Sarawak.

Acknowledging the party’s lack of support in the East Malaysian states, Tuan Ibrahim said there was a need for a different approach to win over Sabahans and Sarawakians, given the different political environment there.

“For our friends in Sabah and Sarawak, I see a need for a new approach

“Maybe autonomy needs to be given to (the PAS chapters in) Sabah and Sarawak to plan their own strategy and approach, to suit the political situation over there,” he said when officiating PAS Youth’s muktamar here tonight.

He also spoke of a need for PAS to build a “grouping of political consensus” beyond the political framework, roping in NGOs and other groups, in order to increase its support among the non-Malays.

PAS did not contest in the 2020 Sabah state election. However, it has a representative in the state assembly after state PAS chief Aliakbar Gulasan was made an appointed assemblyman.

Aliakbar’s appointment made him PAS’s first ever representative in the Sabah legislative assembly. He was one of six appointed by the Hajiji Noor administration.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang previously said the party must contest in the next Sabah state election and win seats.
