Withdraw from workers’ dormitory project, rep urges company
PETALING JAYA: Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz has urged a company planning to construct dormitories for foreign and local workers in Teluk Kumbar, Penang, to withdraw from the project.
The call to Chong Company Sdn Bhd comes after it was revealed that another company, Zantalite Enterprise Sdn Bhd, had withdrawn its application for the project on May 9. It had submitted its application on Nov 16 last year.
Zantalite Enterprise was supposed to rezone two lots at Mukim 9, Teluk Kumbar, from general housing, beach reserve and existing road zones to a general business zone, and increase the height of the hostel building from five to 30 floors.
Azrul said he had sent a letter to Chong Company, dated March 6, asking it to build other developments on the land, including a petrol station and a business centre.
Azrul, who is also the state assembly’s deputy speaker, said the proposed alternative developments would provide greater benefits for the local community.

“I urge Chong Company to follow in the steps of Zantalite Enterprise by withdrawing its planning application for the 512-unit dormitory project on the three plots of land,” he told a press conference, according to Sinar Harian.
Chong Company had received approval from the Penang Island City Council to build a 27-storey hostel building at Tingkat Teluk Kumbar, which will have shoplots and a recreational area on the first and second floors
He said if Chong Company wished to sell the land, the state government would seek funding or assistance from the federal government to acquire it.
“We might propose to the federal government to make the purchase to benefit the residents of Teluk Kumbar,” he said.
Yesterday, local government, town and country planning executive councillor Jason H’ng said the crucial “C1” approval required for Chong Company to begin construction is still pending due to unmet conditions set by the city council.
He told the state assembly that those who wish to apply to build dormitories for more than 10,000 workers must first get the nod from the National Physical Planning Council.
Earlier this year, Teluk Kumbar residents, along with local Pakatan Harapan representatives, staged protests against the workers’ dormitory project, citing concerns about social issues and traffic congestion.
The state government had previously announced that it had approved two applications for the construction of foreign workers’ dormitories in Teluk Kumbar to meet international labour standards and accommodate the workforce for numerous manufacturing facilities.
