Muhyiddin said govt was concerned about Amri and Koh, court told

KUALA LUMPUR: The co-founder of NGO Perlis Hope told the High Court here today that then home minister Muhyiddin Yassin had informed the families of Amri Che Mat and Pastor Raymond Koh that the government was concerned about the missing duo.

Faisol Abd Rahman said both families met Muhyiddin some time in 2019 after a public inquiry by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) concluded that Koh and Amri were victims of an enforced disappearance carried out by the state, specifically by the Special Branch.

Faisol said he had helped the families set up a meeting with Muhyiddin through the latter’s former political secretary, Marzuki Mohamad.

“I attended the meeting with Pastor Koh’s wife Susanna (Liew), Amri’s wife Norhayati (Ariffin) and their lawyers,” he said.

“The meeting was set up because we wanted the government to come out with a solution (after the inquiry’s finding).

“He (Muhyiddin) told us not to worry, saying he would bring the matter to the Cabinet,” he said in response to Liew’s lawyer, Steven Thiru, who asked why they had met Muhyiddin.

Faisol also said then primary industries minister Teresa Kok and former deputy youth and sports minister Steven Sim were at the meeting.

He was testifying in Liew’s lawsuit against the police, the inspector-general of police (IGP) and a number of former high-ranking police officers over Koh’s disappearance.

The list includes former IGPs Khalid Abu Bakar and Fuzi Harun, as well as former principal assistant director of the Special Branch’s social extremism division, Awaludin Jadid.

The others named in the lawsuit are former criminal investigation department chief Huzir Mohamed, former Selangor CID chief Fadzil Ahmat, and police officers Supari Muhammad, Khor Yi Shuen, Hazril Kamis, Shamzaini Daud and Saiful Bahari Abdul Aziz.

Liew is seeking damages over Koh’s disappearance, as well as for the authorities to be held liable for his unlawful abduction, and for misfeasance in public office.

Faisol also told the court he learnt about Koh’s disappearance through social media after a video showing Koh’s alleged abduction on Feb 13, 2017 went viral.

The court will also hear Liew’s discovery bid to obtain the home ministry’s special task force’s report on Koh’s disappearance on July 29.

The home ministry established a special task force to investigate the conclusion reached by Suhakam in its inquiry.

Neither the ministry nor the task force has made public the report despite repeated calls to do so by various parties, including Suhakam and several other NGOs. The report has been classified as a government secret.

The hearing before Justice Su Tiang Joo continues tomorrow.
