Umno does not belong to its top leaders, says Akmal

BUTTERWORTH: Umno does not belong to its top leaders, be it the Supreme Council or the respective wing chiefs, but instead to all its members, says Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh.

Commenting on the party’s poor showing in recent elections, the Melaka executive councillor said the party’s political survival depends on pressure from the grassroots for change.

He said by speaking their mind and being heard by the top leadership, the grassroots can save the party from sinking further into irrelevance.

Akmal added that the 26 parliamentary seats Umno won in the 15th general election (GE15) compared with the 109 seats it held twenty years ago showed it was high time for the grassroots to lead the way and bring the party back to glory.

“This party cannot be used as a shield to defend certain individuals.

“Today, the people want principled leaders. If something is wrong, we will say it is wrong. If it is right, we will say it is right.

“We are not cattle with rings in our noses to be led around. In Umno, we are taught to have principles and most importantly have dignity. Umno has its dignity,” he said when opening the Tasek Gelugor Umno Youth delegates’ conference in Kubang Menerong here.

Akmal also commented on Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam attacking him for criticising the party leadership, saying having differing opinions does not mean he is against the party.

He said it was in the spirit of the party that diverse viewpoints are shared and appreciated by all for a healthy debate.
