DAP can help swing non-Malay votes to BN, says Umno leader

GOMBAK: DAP’s presence at Barisan Nasional’s campaigns in previous elections successfully garnered non-Malay support, an Umno leader said.

Citing the Pelangai state by-election in Pahang in October last year, Selangor Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin pointed out that DAP, tasked with helping out at the SJKC Telemong polling centre, contributed to the victory.

Megat Zulkarnain said the comfortable win by BN’s candidate Amizar Abu Adam was partly due to securing 98% of the votes at the SJKC Telemong polling centre, whose voters were mainly non-Malays.

He said that DAP is well aware of its strengths and advantages in attracting non-Malay votes without interfering with Umno’s role in the Malay areas.

“DAP knows where it can contribute votes to BN’s candidate, that’s why it focused on Telemong, which has 90% non-Malay voters.

“It won’t go into the villages or polling centres without non-Malay voters,” he said.

The issue of DAP’s involvement in BN’s campaign, as its ally in the unity government, has resurfaced ahead of the Nenggiri by-election in Kelantan on Aug 17.

Earlier, FMT reported that Gua Musang Umno chief Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah denied asking DAP to stay away from the by-election campaign, as reported by a news portal on Thursday. He said this was because Nenggiri is a 100% Malay constituency.

Megat Zulkarnain urged all members of the unity government to consider their presence within the coalition, He hoped it would not affect cooperation, including in the Nenggiri by-election.

“Whether DAP comes or not is secondary, but for us at the government level, we welcome DAP to Nenggiri,” he said.
